This writes page content, which is why it always sticks
Text placed here becomes part of the page, in the same way printed text is. That sounds like a technical detail and it is the entire reason to use it.
Interactive form fields are objects layered above a page, and whether they save, display, and print depends on the reader. That is why filled forms so often reopen empty or print blank. Page content has none of those failure modes: it always saves, always prints, and looks identical in every reader.
The trade is that it is not editable as a field afterwards — it is on the page. For anything final, that is exactly what you want.
The marks a form actually needs
Beyond plain text, this places dates, checkmarks and crosses for tick boxes, initials for page corners, and stamps. Those cover most of what a paper form asks for that is not a signature.
For a scanned or flat form — one where clicking does nothing because there are no fields — this is not a workaround but the correct tool. There is no form to fail; you are simply writing on the page, as you would with a pen.
If the form needs a signature as well, Sign PDF handles that and this handles everything around it. Type the date rather than handwriting it unless the form specifically expects handwriting: typed is cleaner and never ambiguous, and an ambiguous date on an agreement is a genuine problem.
Making additions look like they belong
Match the size of the surrounding text rather than the size that feels comfortable while you are placing it. Additions that are noticeably larger than the body text are the clearest sign a document was filled in afterwards.
Align to what is already on the page — the baseline of a printed line, the left edge of a column, the box a value belongs in. On a scanned form, zoom in before placing: something that looks aligned at page-fit is often a few millimetres out at full size.
On a scan that came through slightly tilted, straighten it first with Rotate PDF where you can. Text placed perfectly level on a page that is one degree off is the giveaway, because your addition becomes the only truly horizontal thing on the sheet.
What the text weighs, and which font carries it
Adding one line to a four-megabyte scan cost 606 bytes in our own measurement. Why it is that small is worth understanding, because the same reason explains the single limitation of the result.
The font is not placed inside the file. The output names Helvetica and a WinAnsi encoding and carries no embedded font program at all. Helvetica is one of the fourteen fonts every PDF viewer is required to supply, so the text always renders and never vanishes — but the exact letter shapes come from whatever that viewer substitutes: Arial on Windows, Nimbus Sans on many Linux systems.
What does not vary is the spacing. The character widths are written into the file, so the line never reflows or re-wraps on another machine. For a date, a set of initials, a reference number, or a form entry, that is the right trade, and it is why the addition costs 606 bytes rather than the several hundred kilobytes a genuinely embedded font would add.
Where the exact typeface matters — matching a letterhead, say — this is a real limit rather than a detail, and it is the same substitution mechanism described in why a PDF looks different on another computer.
What the text does do reliably is land where you put it on the page you are looking at. If a page arrived on its side, or you turned it here, the position you pick is read against the preview rather than against the sheet stored underneath it, and the text is drawn upright with the page rather than lying on its side. That was not always true, and a date typed into the corner of a turned page used to arrive somewhere else entirely.
